If one has a USB dvd drive like me,he can install the Windows using the same bootable dvd by making the first boot drive in the system BIOS as USB.Normally people dont buy USB dvd drives and its useless to buy one just to install the operating system.Incase your system is not booting up properly and you wish to reinstall your Windows 7 in your netbook or any other computer that does not have a working dvd drive just follow the steps below to install it using a pendrive
1) Download the Windows 7 USB/DVD tool from the below link
Click here to download the Win 7 USB/DVD tool
2 ) Run the tool once the download is complete. If you run the tool on a computer that has Windows XP installed you may get the error as shown below
This error is for Microsoft Image Mastering API v2.Go to this link here & download it from Microsoft. After installing the update, restart your computer and install the Windows 7 USB/DVD tool.
3) Once you will start the tool it will ask you to select the Windows 7 ISO file as shown below that you should have to make the bootable USB
4 ) After locating the ISO file using the browse button click next
5 ) Now you will see the choose media type screen, click on USB device on the bottom right assuming that your optical drive is not functional or not present. However in many cases selecting the DVD button as media type will also be helpful as shown in image below
6 ) Incase your USB drive is not a bootable USB you will see the message no compatible USB devices detected as shown below
7 ) If it is a boot supported USB it will be listed like my HP USB drive as shown below
8) Once you click on begin copying,it will ask you to format the USB drive as shown below
9 ) Click on erase USB device and once again you will see a warning message, this is the point where you can make sure that USB drive doesnt contain any important data as it would be lost
10 ) It will start creating bootable USB drive (It took around 25 minutes in my test computer running Pentium 4 to complete the process with other applications running simultaneously )
11 ) Now your bootable USB drive is ready & you will see the screen below with the confirmation message
Just restart your computer and go to the BIOS settings to make the first boot drive as USB (all BIOS doesnt support it so crosscheck with your motherboard manufacturer) and start installing Windows 7.If you are not familiar with the installation of Windows 7 here is a complete step by step tutorial for you.
PS : You need to run the tool as administrator and Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 or higher must be installed. You can also use the tool to create a bootable USB for Windows 8 & Windows Server 2008 but not for Windows XP or Windows Vista.
