Ubuntu is one of the initial Linux which I experimented with, when they used to send a CD for free at your Door Step. Eventually, I moved to RPM based distros as cli is more interesting to me than GUI if one talks about #Linux. Debian is all time love but for some reason liked the rpm based distros.
Today, I was just thinking to opt for another distro in the loving memory of our CentOS ( " The CentOS Project ") and visited the Ubuntu download page after Rocky Linux. Rocky Linux installation is almost same as we covered here in the steps for CentOS. However, many security distros and forensic workstations are built on top of the Ubuntu OS and are part of my daily R&D. I thought to write the installation process for everyone so follow the steps below to install Ubuntu on your System or as virtual machine.
1) Boot your system with the Ubuntu media written on CD/DVD or USB (We have many tuts here to make such media.
2) You will see the GRUB menu to select an option. Use the Try or Install Ubuntu one as shown below
4) It will come up with following screen. Please click on install, though you can also try it without installation
6) Now select the following options, if you are not sure about the hardware of your system so that it can install the required drivers.
7) BEWARE of the selection below, if you are planning to make a dual boot system with Windows as it will erase everything. First, get your hands on a Virtual Machine to understand the file system and later you can do the needful for the dual boot system
8) Select somthing else to do tha manual partition for our installation and click continue
9) If you are familiar with LVM then can use the same, else click None
10) Select the device for boot loader installation and click on "New Partition Table". I used a Virtual Machine
14) Select '/' in Mount point to create the root directory. Everything in Linux starts with / and as per the requirement you can give the space
15) You will see the mount point created with provided space
16) Again select the listed free space & click on + sign to create required partitions for our installation
17) Now select /boot for Mount point creation. Keep the file system as same for all our partitions.
18) It will be created and again we need to repeat the process with free space available for more partitions.
19) Now create the SWAP area of double the size of your RAM. My VM was using 5 GB RAM, so I created a SWAP of 10 GB
20) Then create the /home partition for user's home directory
21) If you have seen our old articles then these 4 partitions were enough to install Linux, but here it gives the error for an EFT partition as shown below
22) Please go back to the partition listing and create an EFI System partition
25) Now all the required partitions are created. Select the root (/) and click on "Install Now" button
29) Then it will start copying files for installation
30) Then it starts installing the same and goes through a series of operations
31. After sometime, you will see the message below. Restart the system
